CCCL acquires PH Costs

Civil and Commercial Costs Lawyers (CCCL) has acquired Bristol-based PH Costs Solutions. The two founders and directors, Mark Hardcastle and Steve Page, will be joining the CCCL team as part of the deal.

CCCL managing director Andrew Thomas said: “Following on from Fred Robbins and his team from RMR joining us last year in Manchester, this demonstrates our commitment to the sector.

“Having long wished to develop our business in the south-west, adding PH’s Bristol office, and the skills and expertise of its staff and directors, is a positive step for us. It is our view that in the current environment, growth will bring strength, and as such are actively looking at this kind of addition.”

PH Costs will be renamed Civil and Commercial Costs Lawyers (South West) Ltd and continue to trade principally from its existing offices.

Rule committee to review payments out for litigation friends

The Civil Procedure Rule Committee has given the green light for a subcommittee to address the “growing number” of applications for payment out to meet success fees and after-the-event insurance premiums under part 21 (children and protection parties).

Newly published minutes of the committee’s February meeting said: “The provision concerned had been looked at three years ago when the committee tried to reconcile the differing views expressed by parties on costs and the compromise achieved may have inadvertently restricted the rights of litigation friends to obtain costs. It was agreed that Richard Viney, DJ Hovington, Brett Dixon and Andrew Underwood would consider the issue.”

Yorkshire Costs Lawyers to meet up

The next Yorkshire regional group meeting will be held on Thursday 3 May 2018. Members are invited to attend for a discussion on current costs issues, case law developments and the new electronic bill of costs.

The event will be hosted by Clarion Solicitors (Elizabeth House, 13-19 Queen Street, Leeds, LS1 2TW), from 5pm, with the meeting starting at 5.30pm for an hour. There will then be an opportunity to network with other attendees.
